Question 1

When is the best time to book a cruise?

Accepted Answer

January through March — "wave season" — historically brings the year's best promotions: reduced deposits, onboard credit, drink packages, and kids-sail-free offers. Booking 6–12 months out also gives you the best cabin selection. Read our guide to finding cruise deals.

Question 2

How far in advance should I book?

Accepted Answer

For popular sailings (Alaska in July, holiday cruises, Europe in summer), 9–12 months ahead. For Caribbean off-season, 3–6 months is often fine — and last-minute deals appear 60–90 days out if you're flexible.

Question 3

Are last-minute cruise deals worth it?

Accepted Answer

Yes, if you're flexible on dates and cabin type. Unsold cabins get discounted 60–90 days before sailing, sometimes steeply. The tradeoff: slim pickings on sought-after itineraries, and you'll pay more for flights booked late.

Question 4

What is the cheapest month to cruise?

Accepted Answer

Generally September–October and early December (between Thanksgiving and Christmas), plus January after the holidays. You'll trade a higher chance of rain or cooler weather for 30–50% lower fares.

Question 5

Where is the best cabin on a cruise ship?

Accepted Answer

Midship on a lower deck moves the least — best if you're prone to motion sickness. Higher decks and forward cabins have better views but feel more motion. For light sleepers, avoid cabins under the pool deck, theater, or nightclub.

Question 6

What's the difference between inside, oceanview, balcony, and suite cabins?

Accepted Answer

Inside: no window, lowest price. Oceanview: window or porthole, no private outdoor space. Balcony: private veranda — the sweet spot for most cruisers. Suite: larger space, priority perks, sometimes butler service. See our honest cost breakdown for what each really runs.

Question 7

Are balcony cabins worth the extra money?

Accepted Answer

For scenic itineraries (Alaska, Norway, Greek Isles) — absolutely. For port-heavy Caribbean trips where you're off the ship all day, an inside or oceanview cabin frees up hundreds for excursions and drinks.

Question 8

What deck is best to avoid seasickness?

Accepted Answer

The lowest passenger deck, midship — closest to the ship's center of gravity. Pair it with remedies just in case; even seasoned sailors keep them handy.

Question 9

Is food included on a cruise?

Accepted Answer

Yes — the main dining room, buffet, and casual spots are included in your fare. Specialty restaurants ($30–75/person) cost extra, as do premium coffees and room service on some lines.

Question 10

Are drinks included on a cruise?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the line. Luxury lines (Regent, Seabourn, Silversea) include most drinks. Mainstream lines include water, basic coffee, tea, and juice — soda, alcohol, and specialty coffees cost extra or require a package.

Question 11

Are drink packages worth it?

Accepted Answer

Do the math: packages run $60–100/day per person. At $13–16 per cocktail, you break even around 5–6 drinks a day. Two glasses of wine at dinner? Skip the package. Poolside all afternoon? Buy it.

Question 12

What should I wear to dinner on a cruise?

Accepted Answer

Most nights are smart casual. Most lines still hold 1–2 formal or 'dress your best' nights per week — a cocktail dress or jacket-and-slacks covers it. Check your line's policy; some newer ships have dropped formal nights entirely.

Question 13

Do I have to pay gratuities on a cruise?

Accepted Answer

Nearly all mainstream lines auto-charge $16–20 per person per day, distributed to dining, cabin, and service staff. You can adjust at guest services, but the charges reflect real service — budget for them upfront.

Question 14

How much does a cruise really cost all-in?

Accepted Answer

Far more than the advertised fare. A 7-night Caribbean sailing realistically runs $1,200–1,800/person budget, $2,000–3,500 mid-range, or $5,000–12,000+ luxury once you add taxes, gratuities, drinks, Wi-Fi, and excursions. Our full breakdown covers every line item.

Question 15

Can I use cash on a cruise ship?

Accepted Answer

Ships are cashless — everything goes on your onboard account linked to a credit card. Bring small bills for port vendors and tipping tour guides ashore.

Question 16

Do I need travel insurance for a cruise?

Accepted Answer

Yes — cruises concentrate more prepaid, non-refundable money into a stricter schedule than any other vacation. At minimum get trip cancellation, emergency medical, and evacuation coverage. Read our full explainer or compare plans.

Question 17

What happens if I get sick on a cruise ship?

Accepted Answer

Ships have medical centers staffed 24/7, but you'll typically pay upfront and claim later — and domestic health insurance often doesn't cover care at sea or abroad. Serious cases may require helicopter evacuation at $50,000+. This is exactly why insurance matters.

Question 18

Will I get seasick? What helps?

Accepted Answer

Most people don't, especially on large modern ships with stabilizers. If you're worried: book midship on a lower deck, bring remedies (they're expensive onboard), stay on deck looking at the horizon, and avoid heavy meals and alcohol on rough days.

Question 19

Is cruising safe?

Accepted Answer

Yes — cruising is statistically one of the safest forms of travel, with strict international safety regulations, muster drills, and onboard medical facilities. The bigger risks are mundane: sunburn, dehydration, and norovirus, which hand-washing largely prevents.

Question 20

Do I need a passport for a cruise?

Accepted Answer

For most international itineraries, yes. U.S. citizens on 'closed-loop' cruises (departing and returning to the same U.S. port) can technically sail with a birth certificate and ID — but if you miss the ship in a foreign port or have an emergency, you'll need a passport to fly home. Get one.

Question 21

What happens if I miss the ship in port?

Accepted Answer

The ship will not wait beyond a short grace period — it must keep its schedule for thousands of passengers. You're responsible for getting yourself to the next port at your own expense. (One more reason for travel insurance with missed-connection coverage.)

Question 22

How much luggage can I bring on a cruise?

Accepted Answer

Cruise lines are generous — typically no strict weight limit like airlines, though your flight there still has one. Practical advice: pack for 7 days even on longer sailings (laundry services exist) and leave room for souvenirs.

Question 23

Can I bring alcohol onboard?

Accepted Answer

Policies vary: most lines allow one or two bottles of wine per cabin at embarkation (sometimes with a corkage fee). Spirits and beer are generally confiscated until the end of the cruise. Check your line's policy before you pack.

Question 24

Is there Wi-Fi on cruise ships? How much does it cost?

Accepted Answer

Yes, via satellite — slower and pricier than home: typically $15–30/day, with packages the sane option if you need connectivity. Don't expect to stream video; do expect to check email and messages.

Question 25

What is there to do on sea days?

Accepted Answer

More than you'd expect: pools, spas, fitness classes, cooking demos, lectures, trivia, casinos, Broadway-style shows, and acres of deck chairs. Sea days are many cruisers' favorite part — build an itinerary with at least one.

Question 26

Are cruises good for kids?

Accepted Answer

Very — mainstream lines run excellent kids' clubs (usually free, ages 3–17), water parks, and family programming. Disney, Royal Caribbean, and Carnival lead here; luxury small-ship lines are less kid-focused.

Question 27

Can I cruise solo?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely — and it's increasingly popular. Norwegian, Celebrity, and several others now offer dedicated solo cabins without the dreaded single supplement; otherwise expect to pay 150–200% of the per-person double-occupancy fare.

Question 28

What should I pack for my first cruise?

Accepted Answer

Documents, medications, layers, swimwear, formal-night outfit, reef-safe sunscreen, power strip (non-surge), magnetic hooks, and seasickness remedies. See our 21-item packing list and the free Alaska packing blueprint (PDF).

Question 29

Which cruise line is best for first-timers?

Accepted Answer

For a classic first cruise: Princess or Celebrity for premium comfort, Royal Caribbean for energy and activities, Carnival for value. Tell us your style and budget — we'll match you to the right ship.
