Overwater villas, water so clear it looks Photoshopped, and some of the best snorkeling on earth. Here is how to do the Maldives right, from someone who plans these trips for a living.
Overwater villas are the dream: steps from your deck straight into the lagoon. Beach villas cost less and suit families. North Male Atoll keeps transfers short. Baa Atoll is a UNESCO biosphere reserve famous for manta ray gatherings. South Ari Atoll is the spot for year-round whale shark sightings.
November through April is the dry season: calm seas, clear skies, peak prices. May through October brings rain showers and lower rates, but it is still warm and the diving stays excellent.
Five to seven days is ideal for a single resort stay. Many travelers add a night or two in Dubai or Colombo to break up the long journey.
Mid-range resorts run roughly $400 to $800 per day for two, often including breakfast and transfers by speedboat. Seaplane transfers typically add $200 to $500 per person round trip. Overwater villas command a premium over beach villas.
Fly into Male (MLE), usually connecting through Doha, Dubai, or Colombo. From the US, expect 20-plus hours of travel with at least one stop. From Male airport you reach your resort by seaplane (the scenic option) or speedboat; your resort arranges the transfer, so confirm the timing before you book flights.

Destination Guide
Thirteen kilometers of cliffside road connecting pastel villages, lemon groves, and some of the best coastline in Europe. Here is how to do it without the stress the drive is famous for.
Positano is the postcard: steep lanes, beach clubs, and the highest prices. Amalfi town is central and practical, with the ferry hub. Ravello sits above it all with gardens and views, quieter at night. Sorrento is the value base just outside the coast proper, with easy day-trip access.
May, June, and September are the sweet spot: warm seas, open ferries, sane crowds. July and August are peak: book months ahead and expect premium prices and packed beaches.
Four to five days for the coast itself. Combine with 2 to 3 days in Rome or Naples, or add Capri as an overnight, for a full week.
Mid-range travelers spend roughly $300 to $500 per day for two in season, including a sea-view hotel, ferries, beach clubs, and long lunches. Positano in August can run far higher.
Fly into Naples (NAP), connecting through Rome or a European hub from the US. From Naples, take the ferry (seasonal, the scenic choice), the Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento plus bus, or a private driver. Do not plan to drive yourself unless you enjoy cliffside hairpins.

Travel Insurance
One unexpected hiccup shouldn't sink your vacation or your wallet. Here's what to look for, and a quick quiz to find your fit.
Covers the non-refundable costs you lose if you have to cancel: flights, hotels, cruise fares. Expect to pay around 7% of your trip cost for a solid policy. Only insure what you can't get back.
Your U.S. health insurance usually stops at the border. Look for at least $50,000 in emergency medical coverage for international trips and cruises.
An airlift off a cruise ship or out of a remote area can cost six figures. Aim for at least $100,000 in evacuation coverage, more for cruises and far-flung destinations.
1. What kind of trip are you taking?
2. What's your biggest worry?
Plato Travel may earn a commission if you buy through our links, at no extra cost to you. Coverage details change, so always read the policy wording before you buy.

Our planning and quote service is free. We are compensated by our travel partners and suppliers when you book, so expert advice costs you nothing extra.
No. We plan trips at every budget, from smart-value getaways to five-star journeys. Our philosophy is Travel Wisely, Live Deeply: getting the most out of whatever you spend.
For cruises and peak-season travel, 6 to 9 months ahead gets the best cabins and prices. For most other trips, 2 to 3 months is plenty. Last-minute? Ask anyway. We love a challenge.
Absolutely. Cruises are one of our specialties, from Caribbean sailings to Alaska expeditions. We handle cabin selection, dining, excursions, and pre-cruise hotels.
Both, plus cruises, tours, and travel insurance. One point of contact for the whole trip, so nothing falls through the cracks.
We research your options and reply with a personalized quote, usually within one business day. There is no obligation to book. The quote is free.

When you request a quote or join our email list, we collect the contact details you provide: name, email address, phone number, travel dates, destination, and anything you write in the message field. We also collect basic, anonymized visit data through Google Analytics and the Meta Pixel, which tell us which pages people visit so we can improve the site.
We use your information to respond to quote requests, send the travel deals and updates you signed up for, and understand how the site is used. We do not sell your personal information. Ever.
Some parts of the site hand you off to trusted partners: Amazon for gear recommendations, and Fourthwall for merchandise. When you click those links and buy, that partner's own privacy policy applies. Plato Travel is a travel advisory and planning service. We research, recommend, and help arrange trips. Quotes and itineraries on this site (including anything produced by our AI trip planner) are planning estimates, not final prices or confirmed bookings. Availability and prices change; your confirmed booking details always come from the supplier.

The fine print
Effective October 11, 2026. Here is exactly what happens if something you bought is not right.
Every shirt, hoodie, hat, tote, magnet, and art print in our shop is made to order just for you. Because nothing is sitting on a shelf, we cannot accept returns or exchanges for change of mind, or because a size was not quite right. Please check the size guide on each product page before you order.
If your item arrives misprinted, damaged, or wrong, we will make it right. Email [email protected] within 30 days of delivery with your order number and a photo of the problem, and we will send a replacement or refund you, your choice.
Need to cancel? You can cancel or change an order any time before it goes into production, using the link in your order confirmation email. Once production starts, the order cannot be cancelled. Approved refunds go back to your original payment method: PayPal within about a day, credit or debit cards within 7 to 10 business days.
Our $12 PDF destination guides are delivered instantly by email and download link after purchase. Because they are digital, all guide sales are final once delivered, except one: if your file is corrupted or your download link does not work, email [email protected] and we will send you a working copy or refund you in full.
Items in our Cruise Essentials section are sold and shipped by Amazon, not by us. Returns and refunds for those items follow Amazon's own return policy, which you can start from your Amazon order history.
Hotels, flights, tours, and cruises booked through links on this site are fulfilled by the travel supplier, and their cancellation and refund terms apply. If you run into trouble with a supplier, email us and we will do our best to help you sort it out.
Questions about a return or refund? Reach us at [email protected] or 1-385-349-0612. Include your order number and a photo if something arrived damaged or wrong.
